When you are re-keying a lock, you are using the procedure of transforming the tumblers within the lock cylinder to tumblers that have various sizes. The main idea of door lock re-keying is to make a new key that will be able to control the same lock that you have already, without replacing it. With that said, once you have completed your door lock re-keying, you are now able to get rid of any keys that was belonging to that door lock. Those old keys will no longer be able to operate the locks. Door Lock Re-Keying Process

The process of re-keying locks is quite simple, if you know what you're doing. Sometimes it just might be easier if you can hire a professional for assistance, rather than try to do it yourself. Here is a simple process that you can follow along with you kit instructions, if you were to re-key a lock yourself.

Start by having the door unlocked
You need to remove the entire door knob and hardware
Using the tools in your re-keying kit, take out the cylinder
Locate the retainer ring and remove it from the cylinder
Now you need to insert your original key into the lock and turn the key as if you were unlocking the lock
Using the tools from your kit, remove the cylinder plug, Try not to let any of the springs or pins pop out from the cylinder
Get rid of the original pins and then insert your new key. You will then need to match the new colored pins, (refer to your color guide listed in the instruction manual)
Now you can reassemble your lock

It does not matter the reason as to why you are re-keying locks. The main focus is that you are performing the steps to re-key the locks properly. You do not have to do this blind.
