When you are re-keying a lock, you are using the procedure of transforming the tumblers within the lock cylinder to tumblers that have various sizes. The main idea of door lock re-keying is to make a new key that will be able to control the same lock that you have already, without replacing it. With that said, once you have completed your door lock re-keying, you are now able to get rid of any keys that was belonging to that door lock. Those old keys will no longer be able to operate the locks. By hiring a Local Locksmith in your area, you would actually be saving yourself quite a bit of money and of course, saving yourself some time. Even a Locksmith would be less expensive, rather than replacing and installing a brand new door lock set.

Just because you are performing door lock re-keying, does not always mean something negative has happened to you or your home. There are quite a lot of individuals who reside in condos, apartments, or even in rentals, that have a need to re-key their locks. You do not have to own your own home to have the capabilities to rekey a lock either. There are millions of people who do it just for the convenience of having it done. Do you have tons of keys on one key ring that open several entrance doors to your home? Why not convert one key to have full access to every door in your home? That way, you have one key with several functions, instead of several keys for several functions. By having a Locksmith perform door lock re-keying to all of the locks, you are now only using the convenience of one key. The only problem would be if you are the owner of a rental or if you are the Manager of an apartment building, then you may need to have, what is called, a Master Key. A Master Key is a key that is able to have access to every door lock in the community in case of an emergency, aside from the key that the tenant was given for their residence.

Door Lock Re-Keying Process:

The process of re-keying locks is quite simple, if you know what you’re doing. Sometimes it just might be easier if you can hire a professional for assistance, rather than try to do it yourself. Here is a simple process that you can follow along with you kit instructions, if you were to re-key a lock yourself.

Start by having the door unlocked
You need to remove the entire door knob and hardware
Using the tools in your re-keying kit, take out the cylinder
Locate the retainer ring and remove it from the cylinder
Now you need to insert your original key into the lock and turn the key as if you were unlocking the lock
Using the tools from your kit, remove the cylinder plug, Try not to let any of the springs or pins pop out from the cylinder
Get rid of the original pins and then insert your new key. You will then need to match the new colored pins, (refer to your color guide listed in the instruction manual)
Now you can reassemble your lock

It does not matter the reason as to why you are re-keying locks. The main focus is that you are performing the steps to re-key the locks properly. You do not have to do this blind. There are re-keying kits as well as instructional videos that can help you. Our suggestion is that you call your Locksmith. Only a qualified technician can complete their job at hand without using instruction sheets or manuals. Again, by hiring a Locksmith, you can save your time and your money. Knowing that the job was done correctly is a larger piece of mind, opposed to saving money.
